Case law is created when judges interpret and apply statutes to the facts of a dispute. Each ruling explains how a statute should be understood in that situation, and future cases rely on those decisions as precedent. This is distinct from statutory law, which is enacted by the legislature. The other terms aren’t types of law: an issue is a point in dispute, and a contestant is a party in a case.
